Study Links Pfizer’s Depo-Provera to a Type of Brain Cancer

Publish Date : 01/08/2025

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal has identified a link between Pfizer’s contraceptive injection, Depo-Provera, and an increased risk of meningiomas—a type of brain tumor.

The French study monitored over 108,000 women over a decade, including 18,000 diagnosed with meningiomas. Women using Depo-Provera for more than a year were found to have a five- to six-fold higher risk of developing these tumors compared to non-users.

Dr. Noemie Roland, the study’s lead author, noted that these results align with studies from Indonesia and a recent large-scale study in the USA, suggesting a consistent association between Depo-Provera and meningioma risk.

The findings have prompted potential legal actions against Pfizer alleging a lack of prior warnings about the risks associated with Depo-Provera.

Meningiomas are often slow-growing and non-malignant, with a suspected hormonal connection due to their prevalence among middle-aged women. Experts advise caution regarding the long-term use of Depo-Provera, recommending it as a short-term option for specific conditions like endometriosis.

The Depo-Provera litigation highlights concerns regarding drug safety and the need for pharmaceutical companies to prioritize patient health over profits. Women and families affected by Depo-Provera injuries are now seeking justice through the legal system.
