Roblox Finally Announces Age-Verification Rules – But Is It Too Late?

Publish Date : 11/19/2025

Roblox, the massive online gaming world with more than 70 million daily users, most of whom are children, announced this week it is rolling out new age-verification technology aimed at better protecting minors. For years, parents and state attorneys generals have warned predators were exploiting the platform’s weak safety systems. Now, under mounting legal and public pressure, Roblox is finally promising change.

Roblox Turns to AI to Verify a Child’s Age

According to the company, Roblox will soon require users to verify their age using AI-powered facial age estimation, paired with ID checks, and parental consent. The company claims this will provide a far more accurate age verification than simply asking a child to type in a birthday.

In an interview with CBS Mornings, Roblox CEO alleged the proposed system will be “the gold standard for safety and civility on the internet.”

Parents, however, immediately raised a critical concern:

Why should children send images of their faces to a company that has already failed to keep predators away from children?

Roblox insisted it “does not store the images,” alleging they are deleted after the system processes the photos and the photos are used only to estimate age and then to place the user in age-appropriate spaces.

A Slow Rollout While Dangers Continue

Roblox plans to begin enforcing these checks in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands before expanding worldwide in early January. The company is also launching a new “online safety center” designed to help parents understand parental-control options, controls, that, according to critics, have been criticized as difficult to find, navigate, and/or as ineffective.

This sudden urgency from Roblox isn’t happening in a vacuum. It comes as the company faces a wave of lawsuits filed by families across the country, as well as by the attorneys general of Kentucky and Louisiana. These lawsuits accuse Roblox, Discord, and other tech platforms of enabling predators to target and groom children and promoting video game addiction.

Roblox even announced it would require age verification for anyone who wants to use communication features, aiming to block adult-child interactions unless they are already connected in real life.

Is This a Real Safety Upgrade — or Corporate Damage Control?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Roblox’s safety crisis didn’t appear overnight.

For years, the platform allowed unrestricted voice chat, unverified age claims, and private experiences where adults could impersonate children. Countless parents reported predators befriending, manipulating, and exploiting kids through Roblox’s games, messaging features, and partner platforms like Discord.

Only after lawsuits, media investigations, and pressure from state officials did Roblox begin to tighten its systems.

Now the company wants parents to trust an AI-powered selfie system when it couldn’t even keep predators out of child-labeled game rooms.

Families Need More Than Promises

Age verification is a step — but it is not a solution. Predators exploit loopholes. Children find workarounds and tech companies historically overpromise and underdeliver on safety. Parents deserve transparency, stronger protections, and platforms that put children before profit.
