What are TDF drugs?

In 2001, the FDA began approving a line of TDF (tenofovir DF) drugs for the treatment of HIV infection in adults. It is used in combination with other medications to keep the HIV virus under control. In 2008, the FDA approved it for use in patients with chronic hepatitis B. In 2012, TDF drugs were approved to treat HIV in children over the age of two years old.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the bodys immune system. Without treatment, HIV can make it so that the body is unable to mount a proper defense against infections and diseases. TDF drugs block the action of an HIV enzyme called reverse transcriptase. By doing so, it helps prevent the virus from multiplying and reduce the amount of HIV in the body.

Our attorneys are currently representing individuals who were treated with the following TDF drugs:

  • Viread
  • Truvada
  • Stribild
  • Complera
  • Atripla

What type of side effects are individuals experiencing?

Studies have linked high doses of TDF to an increased risk of kidney and bone density loss problems. TDF drugs are not readily absorbed by the body. Because of this, higher doses of the drugs are required to be effective. Injuries include:

  • Kidney damage and kidney failure
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Acute kidney problems
  • Fanconi syndrome (a disorder of kidney tubule function)
  • Tubular dysfunction (tubular acidosis)
  • Osteopenia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bone fractures
  • Bone mineral density loss problems
