Textured breast implants have been linked to a rare type of cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma or BIA-ALCL. BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the immune system). In most cases, BIA-ALCL is found in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant, but in some cases, it can spread throughout the body. The most common symptoms of BIA-ALCL are persistent swelling or pain near the breast implant. A recent analysis conducted by the FDA has shown that Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implants and expanders may be 6 times more likely to cause BIA-ALCL than other types of implants.

Allergan BIOCELL Implants Recalled

On July 24, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Allergan voluntarily recall of BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders. In December 2018, the company suspended sales in all countries of the European Union, Australia, Brazil, and Israel. Canada suspended Allergans license to sell these breast implants in May 2019.
