Taxotere and hair loss

Taxotere, a chemotherapy drug manufactured by Sanofi SA, was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. This drug is mostly used to treat breast cancer, but it can also be used in patients suffering from lung cancer, prostate cancer, and stomach cancer among others.

Of the 2.8 million women in the United States who have suffered from breast cancer, approximately 75% were prescribed Taxotere as part of their treatment. According to a National Cancer Research Institute study, over 15% of Taxotere patients suffer from some sort of significant persistent hair loss. Alternative treatments carry a lower risk of alopecia

French medical oncologist, Hugues Bourgeois, has performed research on the risk of hair loss from Taxotere. In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Dr. Bourgeois noted that because permanent hair loss can make women look ill and look like they are always fighting cancer, it can have an important impact on quality of life.

Because of the risk of permanent hair loss, Dr. Bourgeois offers his patients a choice between 4 cycles of Taxotere and 12 cycles of Taxol, a drug that presents a much smaller risk of permanent hair loss. In his experience, most women pick Taxol when fully informed. Unfortunately, many women are not fully informed and end up suffering from unexpected permanent hair loss.
